Save This Summer By Maintaining Your Appliances

Saving money on utilities while also being Earth-friendly is all the rage nowadays. And rightfully so. Combining those two important causes not only helps save you cash to spend in more important ways, but also helps the environment as well. In fact, some experts predict that all of our homes may one day end up like this energy-saving home in San Francisco, which achieved a status known as “zero net energy”, a home that generates as much electricity as it pulls from the grid.

While this type of home may one day become the norm in California, many of us still have to find other important ways to save on electricity bills in the meantime. That’s why it’s important to take some easy steps to maintain your appliances and ensure that you’re doing all you can to save money on your electricity bill each and every month:

  • Verify Your Oven Seals Properly and Tightly: Although it sounds like a simple concept, having an oven that doesn’t seal properly can result in more than 20% of its heat being lost. This excess in consumption can result in your utilities bill skyrocketing.
  • Clean Your Air Conditioning Filter: Filters that are dirty or worse, clogged, can cause your air conditioning unit to work extra hard, reducing efficiency and causing your utilities bill to soar. Maintain your air conditioner by cleaning your filters every two to four weeks to ensure that your unit is functioning properly.
  • Change The Water Filter In Your Refrigerator: If your water filter isn’t functioning properly, it could expose you to harmful contaminants while also straining your unit. Maintain your refrigerator and avoid costly issues that can be easily prevented!
  • Take Care Of Your Compressor Coils: Dirty compressor coils won’t effectively remove heat from inside your refrigerator unit, causing the appliance’s impressor to run both hotter and longer. Dust off your compressor coils (usually located in the back or bottom of your refrigerator) every six months or so to avoid this from becoming a costly issue.
  • Prevent A Leaky Dishwasher: A dishwasher can be our best friend taking care of an arduous task. However, it can become more of an issue if we don’t take care of it on a regular basis. Clean the bottom edge of your dishwasher and keep the door gaskets clean using water and bleach to avoid leakage, helping save you in the long run.

Appliances make all of our lives a lot easier, however they need some care to ensure that they don’t become a burden in our lives. Whether you take care of your appliances on your own or want to call a professional service, make sure you don’t neglect these simple steps to take care of your home or commercial appliances.
